Urgent Reforms Needed in Indian Education 2021

In the recent events during the pandemic, we have realized how important it is to be educated and well informed. Our country has suffered from a major problem with education, we all know how crucial education is to shape our lives. In India, the education system has several issues. Even though the Indian government and institutions are reforming the existing education model, it cannot be denied that they are doing so. But there are a few issues that still need to be addressed.

Indian Education System in a Nutshell

In India, we have a typical saying " My Son will become an engineer one day ". We concentrate on one subject and one stream to be the best and the rest is merely a consolation prize.

Our education system needs to take steps to make sure all educational streams are equal. We need to give importance to every subject we have. As long as the science stream dominates the stream hierarchy, we'll continue to survive in the education system. Languages, literature, and art are not considered high profile, while students are pushed to only choose high profile subjects.

It is better to prompt students to pursue the subjects they are interested in rather than distinguishing between them.In India, the education system needs to be reformed and steps should be taken,

Despite the fact that the Indian government and institutions are reforming the existing education model, it cannot be denied that they are doing so. But there are a few issues that still need to be addressed. Some of the issues that need to be addressed are:


1. Rote Learning or in Hindi Rattebazzi

Though we have progressed over time, we have not yet been able to move away from rote learning. The fact that IB schools are transforming the education system at their level is well known, however, it is also important to understand that the population that attends IB schools is relatively small in scope.

Their education system is not affordable for everyone. Governments everywhere need to take the initiative to eradicate rote learning from schools on all levels.

In order to prevent students from mugging up information, schools must introduce conceptual learning. As a result, students will not only be able to better understand the concepts but also retain and apply them more effectively. Students need both theoretical and practical knowledge to sustain themselves in today’s competitive world.

  • The lack of access to higher education has caused thousands of people in the country to lose their dream of going to college.
  • The average student in this country has access to only 10-15 percent of higher education. It is time to change this situation. The government should endeavor to make lower-level education available to everybody.
  • Examinations, evaluations, and result publication were the responsibility of the universities. The situation needs to be changed. The universities should undertake more research, publish more research papers, and introduce more innovative technologies so that the student can become more intuitive and gain the necessary practical knowledge to meet the needs as required.

While India has a 74.1 literacy rate, China has 98.4%. It is imperative that we improve the quality of our school education.Therefore, it is high time the Indian Government takes immediate measures to enhance the level of education so that not only will individual achievement be enhanced but also the country will become more prosperous, and perhaps, soon, India will become one of the best countries in terms of education. Accordingly, the Indian Education System requires substantial reforms.

2. The Tech-Savvy Era Should be Introduced to Everyone

Our era has been marked by the fourth industrial revolution, as we all know. In such a time of technological renaissance, technology and education are inextricably linked. It is important that technology is taught to students right from the very beginning of their education so that it will not seem foreign to them later on. Education and technology should be integrated seamlessly in Indian schools as that is where students' future lies.

3. Education Evaluation System Needs to Improve

Despite this, marks are still considered the most important factor in determining the future of children, and students are burdened with this. There is no denying the fact that students often fail to perform well when under the pressure of marks. Evaluation should not solely be based on the results of a three-hour exam, but rather upon the level of participation in the classroom, projects, and leadership skills, as well as extracurricular activities. If the students give their best and are evaluated accordingly, the results will be the best they can be.

Comparison between Singapore Education and Indian Education

University of California’s research on child physiology shows that what is more important than the curriculum itself is the methods of teaching and the ethos with which the teaching takes place. With Singapore's curriculum, students can explore their interests through research-based projects and activities, instead of following a strict textbook regimen.

For application-based learning to develop analytical skills in students, the government invests largely in laboratories and other technologies, which are then paired with classroom instruction. Students in Singapore achieve application-based learning firstly through a flexible, but focused curriculum, where they are allowed to choose subjects that interest them and are given a range of options for assessment.

Furthermore, the second type of learning occurs through Pedagogy, or how the approach to teaching, theory, and practice of learning affect and are influenced by social, political, and psychological development.

Singaporean and Indian education systems are fundamentally different in the way they cultivate creative ability among their students. Whilst creativity in Indian education is barely acknowledged, Singapore cultivates its students' ability to think creatively. Although there are several steps that have been taken by the Government of India to finally shed a light on creativity in Students, in the upcoming New Education Policy in India (NEP).

India could easily adapt new teaching methods by updating its curriculum since people understand the difference in teaching methods. Updating the Indian educational system to produce more creative and research-oriented students will result in a workforce that is critical thinking and productive, which will eventually boost the Indian economy and nation. There need to be serious reforms and changes to the Indian Education System. There is a need for fundamental reforms in India. Memorizing facts is preferred over other types of learning. A student's talent is judged here by only one parameter, namely the percentage in board examinations. In an Indian education system, students are spoon-fed and just mug up.

Our educational system does not provide any practical knowledge. The majority of our educational system is devoted to theoretical knowledge. Our educational system places more emphasis on theoretical knowledge than on basic knowledge. It is very hard to receive an education in India and the social system basically ignores children's feelings, opinions, and ambitions. Kids are pushed to study from the age of 3. People who do not perform well are treated like idiots by society and their parents. My opinion is that our education should be an all-around development program. The competition should be more creative than mugging-based. Promoting practical, visualized education is necessary.

So, what are the changes the NEP also known as New Education Policy will make, In addition to highlighting the importance of equity and quality in education, efforts must be made to expand the scope of quality education. By changing curriculums away from content-heavy ones, the policy intends to make space for critical thinking, inquiry-based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis-based learning. In order to achieve a seamless education, co-curricular activities (arts, sports, and vocational skills) should receive equal weight. This eliminates the rigid silos of "arts," "science," and "commerce," in an effort to develop 21st-century skills. It is a welcome breath of fresh air, as the current system is heavily geared towards rote learning and exam-based examinations that don't really engage the student.

Similarly, the National Education Plan 2020, like the NEP 1986 and the Right to Education Act 2009, is ambitious and progressive. India's growing young population has a great deal of potential to be its greatest strength. In order to accomplish this, however, the government must demonstrate its commitment to implementing the policy with sufficient political will and urgency.
